Kick-off of EU Horizon legumes project to boost sustainability of agroecosystems

VALERECO aims to highlight the often overlooked benefits of legumes and promote their integration into cropping systems to support the environmental sustainability of agricultural productivity. The main objective is to promote the understanding and adoption of legumes in agriculture by quantifying and enhancing the environmental and economic value of the ecosystem services provided by legumes.

VALERECO is a new project funded by the Horizon Europe programme. It brings together a diverse consortium of 15 partners from 11 countries and was officially launched in June with a successful kick-off meeting in Athens, Greece. The two IUP working groups Environmental Behaviour and Planning (Prof. Ann-Kathrin Koessler) and Landscape Planning and Nature Conservation (Prof. Christina von Haaren) are jointly working together in VALERECO. They are leading the work package "Development of tools and networks for the exploitation of legumes in agroecologically-based farming systems", in which a central component is the development of a decision support system for biodiversity and environmentally friendly legume systems based on ecological and behavioural research.
